ASA, MSU and U of I begin 4th year of cutting-edge researchIn the ongoing feed efficiency project between the American Simmental Association, Montana State University and University of Illinois, October will see the fourth crop of Simmental- and Angus-sired steers from Montana ranches headed for the University of Illinois' state-of-the-art research facility. Just as it has been collected on more than 1,200 steers over the project's prior three years, individual feed intake data, as well as a myriad of other growth, ultrasound and carcass traits, will be collected on these 400 plus steers. This fall also marks the initiation of a high-roughage-ration intake project involving the heifer mates to these steers. The project, spearheaded by Dr. John Paterson, is being carried out at Montana State University. It will run for several years and follow the females throughout their life cycle. These projects will yield one of the largest and most comprehensive data sets ever collected with individual intake data on pedigreed animals. The accumulation of this data will assist ASA in developing and refining genetic evaluation tools for its members and provide researchers with a better understanding the complexities of intake and efficiency The American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, Mont., and maintains the herd registries for the Simmental and Simbrah breeds of cattle. ASA has an active adult and junior membership of nearly 8,000. 10/20/08 Date: 10/15/08 Advertisement
