NMSU rodeo team competes in first rodeo of the seasonNew Mexico The New Mexico State University rodeo team started the season off well during the Mesalands College National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeo in Tucumcari Sept. 19 and 20. The men's team placed first overall with 660 points, beating Central Arizona College. The women's team came in second overall. "We started out the year in great shape. I'm very pleased with the students' performances and am looking forward to our next rodeo in Tsaile, Ariz.," said Jim Dewey Brown, NMSU rodeo coach. In the breakaway roping, Megan Wilkerson, of Sonoita, Ariz., won first. Katie Hooper, of Lamoille, Nev., placed second. Aztec, N.M., native Kelsi Elkins won first in the barrel racing event. Teammate Staci Stanbrough, of Capitan, N.M., placed second. Julie Etchegaray, of Eureka, Nev., received second in goat tying. "We had a solid second-place finish, winning two of the three girls' events, but we need to step it up at the Dine College rodeo. It was exciting to be here as a coach instead of a contestant and I am looking forward to the rest of the season," said Megan Corey Albrecht, NMSU assistant rodeo coach. For the men's team, Trey Bissett, of Bay City, Texas, won first place in the bareback riding event. Dean Daly, of Belen, N.M., and Daniel Orris, of Durango, Colo., received first and second place, respectively. Bissett placed second in the bull riding, and Dusty Thornton, of Calhan, Colo., received third. In the tie-down roping, Johnny Salvo, of Horse Springs, N.M., won first. JoDan Mirabal, of Grants, N.M., placed second. Justin Wilson, of Carlsbad, N.M., won first in the steer wrestling. Header Aaron Shelley, of Gila, N.M., and heeler Coy Burruel, of Tucson, Ariz., placed second in the team roping. Corban Livingston, of El Paso, Texas, and Rodee Walraven, of Datil, N.M., placed third. Bissett was named the men's all-around champion for the weekend. The next NIRA rodeo NMSU will compete in will be held at Dine College in Tsaile, Ariz., Oct. 18-19. 10/13/08 Date: 10/3/08 Advertisement
