Illinois teams sweep 62nd livestock judging contest at National Barrow Show

Top teams in the 62nd annual National Barrow Show Swine Judging Contest held Sept. 8 in Austin, Minn., were University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill., in the senior college division; Black Hawk East College, Kewanee, Ill., in the junior college division; and Madison County (Illinois) 4-H, Highland, Ill., in the junior division.

The winning team in each of the three levels of judging competition was awarded according to points accumulated in the contest. This year's contest attracted 72 teams and 382 participants.

Senior College Division

University of Illinois won first place in the senior college division with a score of 3026 points out of a possible 3250 points.

The U of IL team competed against 15 other teams in the university division. Members of this team, coached by Dan Shike, included Jacob Jones, Brian Down, Travis Meteer, Rich Chapple, Rachel Stuart, Justin Adcock, and Ariel Denny.

Texas Tech University, Lubbock, was second in the senior college division with a score of 3015 points. Coached by Ryan Rathmann, this team was comprised of Josh Campbell, Chance Williams, Bryan Bernhard, Chance Van Dyke, Judd Gardner, Colton Long, and Marcus Arnold.

Texas A&M University of College Station, coached by Zach Rambo and Blake Bloomberg came in third with a score of 3003. Iowa State University, Ames, finished fourth with 2972 and Colorado State University, Fort Collins, was fifth with a score of 2918.

Additional team placings in the senior college division were: Sixth--Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, 2916; Seventh--University of Minnesota, St. Paul, 2907; Eighth--Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, 2874; Ninth--University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, 2855; and Tenth--Western Illinois University, Macomb, 2798.

Jacob Jones, University of Illinois, was the top individual in the university division with 618 points out of a possible 650. Also from U of IL in second place was Brian Down with 616 points. Teammates Josh Campbell and Chance Williams of Texas Tech finished 3rd and 4th respectively with scores of 611 and 610. Placing fifth overall was Melissa Volosin of Colorado State University, 609.

Senior college reasons awards were given to the top team and top five individuals. The University of Illinois squad captured first with 938 points. The high individual in reasons was Brian Down, U of IL, with a score of 193 of 200 possible. With a score of 190 from Texas Tech, Josh Campbell placed second. In third and fourth with scores of 189 were Bryan Bernhard of Texas Tech and Travis Meteer, U of IL. Marcus Arnold of Texas Tech took home fifth with a total of 188. The ties were broken based on lower placing totals for reasons classes.

Junior College Division

Black Hawk East Junior College took home top honors out of eleven teams in the junior college division with a score of 3024 points out of a possible 3250 points.

Coached by Dan Hoge and Brian Arnold, team members were Seth Lawyer, Emily Griffiths, Justin Stierwalt, Nate Schmidgal, Alex Denny, Jordan McGrew, and Devin Goehring.

Blinn College, Brenham, Texas, finished second with a score of 3001. Blinn is coached by Brant Poe and his team consisted of Dustin Vausek, Cassidy Hayes, Beau Gaylord, Joseph Rathmann, Lance Bearb, Kevin Gleason, and Riggin Barham.

Lakeland College, Mattoon, Ill., coached by Jon Althaus was third at 2906. Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, Kan., was fourth with a score of 2876 and Joliet Junior College, Joliet, Ill., was fifth with 2816.

Additional team placings in the junior college division were: Sixth--Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Ill., 2804; Seventh--Seward County Community College, Liberal, Kan., 2794; Eighth--Spoon River College, Canton, Ill., 2771; Ninth--Fort Scott Community College, Fort Scott, Kan., 2723; and Tenth--Murray State College, Tishomingo, Okla., 2717.

The top individual of the junior college division was Seth Lawyer, Black Hawk East, with a total of 614 out of a possible 650 points. In second was Dustin Vausek of Blinn College with 610. All with totals of 609, Cassidy Hayes of Blinn College was 3rd and Black Hawk East teammates Emily Griffiths and Justin Stierwalt finished 4th and 5th respectively. Ties were broken by higher reasons totals.

Black Hawk East had the high team reasons score of 926 points. Cassidy Hayes, Blinn College secured high individual honors in reasons with a score of 191. BHE's Emily Griffiths, Seth Lawyer, and Justin Stierwalt held down the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions with scores of 190, 189, and 187. Lance Bearb, Blinn College, talked his way to fifth place with a score of 186.

Junior Division

Madison County (Illinois) 4-H, captured top honors in the junior division of the 62nd annual NBS swine judging contest this year. There were 45 teams in the Junior Division from seven states which included Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Georgia, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Montana.

The Madison County team members Miles Toenyes, A.J. DeOrnellas, and Kolton Smith accumulated 943 of a possible 975 points.

Clinton Central (Indiana) FFA, Michigantown, IN, finished second with 892. Alyssa Smith, Brant Smith, and Courtney Smith are coached by Roger Carr.

Tri-Point (Illinois) FFA #1, under the guidance of Diana Loschen came in third with a score of 876. St. Ansgar (IA) FFA #1 was fourth with 859 and Big Timber (Montana) 4-H #1 wrapped up fifth with 852 points.

The high individual in the junior division with a score of 318 out of 325 possible was Kyle Dice of Avilla, IN. Myles Toenges, Madison County (Illinois) 4-H, was second with a total of 311. Riley McKenney, Big Timber (Montana) 4-H #2 placed third with a score of 308. Big Timber (Montana) 4-H #1 team member Jackie McKenney was 4th with 302 points. Scoring 300, A.J. DeOrnellas, Madison County (Illinois) 4-H took home 5th.

The competition is held in conjunction with the four-day National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn. This event is co-sponsored by Hormel Foods Corporation and the National Association of Swine Records.
