Engage senses, be green at 2008 Wild Fruit and Nut JamNebraska The 2008 Wild Fruit and Nut Jam promises this year to be bigger, better and greener than ever. The Wild Fruit and Nut Jam Oct. 18 in Nebraska City can help Nebraskans experience what the state has to offer the senses. The event's assortment of nuts, jellies, baked goods, teas, vegetables, music, jewelry and furniture also showcase the importance of goods in Nebraska's economy. "Nebraskans should be interested in going to this event because it highlights the importance of us taking care of our economy," said Connie Reimers-Hild, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator at the Kimmel Education and Research Center. "We've had a recent economic downturn, and this can show what we have to offer." The Wild Fruit and Nut Jam, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Kimmel Education and Research Center, has activities for children along with presentations throughout the day. Key speakers and topics for the day include: Robin DiPietro and Reimers-Hild, UNL, It's Easy Being Green, 10 a.m.; Cindy Monson, The Avenue Grill, Evening Express--Dinners without the Mess of Cooking, 11 a.m.; Mark Udey, Raymark Inc., Transforming Trees into Furniture, 12 p.m.; Kristie Dierking, Heavenly Creations, Decorating with Edible Flowers, 1 p.m.; Billene Nemec, Buy Fresh Buy Local, Good Fresh Local in Minutes, 2 p.m.; Vaughn Hammond, UNL, Edible Landscapes, 3 p.m. This year's Wild Fruit and Nut Jam has an increased emphasis on sustainability and going green. "We decided to make it an emphasis," Reimers-Hild said, "because it's something we've always been doing. Sustainability has been an emphasis throughout our work. With the popularity of going green, we wanted to make sure to bring that to the forefront of what we do as well." Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. For more information, contact the Kimmel Education and Research Center at 402-873-3166. Information, including a list of vendors and workshop schedule, also is available online at the Nebraska Forest Service, www.nfs.unl.edu, or the Kimmel Education and Research Center, www.kimmel.unl.edu. At the very least, Reimers-Hild said, Nebraskans should check the event out. "We just really like to invite people out to learn and see what Nebraska has to offer," she said. The Wild Fruit and Nut Jam is sponsored by the Nebraska Forest Service, UNL Extension in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Pear's Gourmet, Herman's, Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard, River Country Economic Development Corp. and Grow Nebraska. 10/13/08 Date: 10/3/08
