Culver calls disaster aid 'a start' for Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)--Iowa Gov. Chet Culver says a disaster relief package approved in Congress over the final weekend of September is "a start" to the state's recovery from severe weather in the spring and summer.

Culver says the issue now will be how large of a share Iowa gets of the $23 billion approved by Congress.

The governor says he will press for aid to specific areas, such as agriculture and transportation, while also seeking general disaster relief.

Culver spoke Sept. 29 after giving a speech to older Iowans taking part in a meeting to set legislative priorities.
