Chambliss hears testimony on agriculture disaster relief efforts

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, R-GA, Sept. 24 received testimony during a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing on the effectiveness of agricultural disaster assistance programs in the wake of the 2008 Midwest floods, Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike. Sen. Chambliss said the hearing was an opportunity to gather suggestions on improving response and recovery efforts caused by natural disasters ranging from massive crop loss to emergency food distribution.

"We all know that there is not much that can be done to prevent natural disasters from occurring, but we can always work on and improve our response and recovery efforts," said Sen. Chambliss, Ranking Republican Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. "When a natural disaster occurs the economic losses do not stop at the producer, but extend down the production line and into the community. Considering the total of all estimated crop losses caused by natural disasters this year, it could have a staggering affect on our economy across the board."

Sen. Chambliss also urged the witnesses to outline their experiences and recommendations in terms of the emergency food assistance programs.

"The success of emergency food assistance depends on the preparedness and coordination of federal, state, local, faith-based and private-sector providers," said Sen. Chambliss. "Proper planning is paramount to establishing congregate feeding sites and the delivery of emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. The Committee and the country will benefit from the lessons learned and shared by today's witnesses."
