AgriLife Extension plans two San Angelo sheep and goat workshops

Texas

Texas AgriLife Extension Service's office in Tom Green County has scheduled two sheep and goat production workshops for Oct. 21 and Nov. 25 in San Angelo.

The workshops will run from 5:45 to 9 p.m., in the Tom Green County 4-H Building, located at 3168 N. U.S. Highway 67.

"This will be a great program for anyone with five to 5,000 head of sheep or goats," said Steve Sturtz, AgriLife Extension agent in Tom Green County. "We've scheduled two meetings because there is just too much information to cover in one. We're hoping participants will plan to attend both the workshops."

Sturtz said the programs will offer the most up-to-date information available pertaining to West Texas sheep and goat production.

"We're pulling together AgriLife result demonstration information on parasites, range monitoring, reproductive problems and diseases," he said. "We'll have the latest information on protecting livestock from predators, and share information on record keeping, marketing and the new COOL or country-of-origin labeling mandate."

Other topics will include forages, feeding and ways to slash feed costs while still raising a healthy, productive lamb and kid crop, Sturtz said.

"This program will be a great opportunity for novice producers to gain knowledge in all areas of sheep and goat production, or for longtime producers to get new ideas and refresh their minds about general production and management techniques," he said.

One Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education unit in the general category will be offered at each workshop.

Individual registration for each workshop is $10. Participants are asked to RSVP one week prior to each meeting by calling the AgriLife Extension office in Tom Green County at 325-659-6524. A light sandwich meal will be available.
