West Plains regional cattle auction reportThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,700 head Oct. 28, compared to 3,013 head last week and 4,532 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers at 450 to 650 pounds were $2 to $4 lower, over 650 pounds were steady to $2 lower. Heifers at 400 to 700 pounds were $2 to $5 lower, and over 700 pounds were weak to $3 lower. Light steer calves under 450 pounds and heifers under 400 pounds were steady to $2 higher. The supply was moderate, quality and uniform bunches were more attractive and plentiful than last week. Demand was uneven, moderate to good on better quality weaned with shots, light to moderate on the un-weaned and light on un-weaned and fat, especially those of lesser quality. Stronger beef prices and perhaps the near 900-point rally at the Dow aided live cattle futures to close up 10 to 82 points, but 5 to 7 cents higher corn futures turned feeder contracts 12 to 60 points to the south. The supply consisted of 58% steers and 42% heifers, with nearly 41% weighed over 600 pounds. Good buyer attendance.
