USDA releases cattle on feed numbersSouth Dakota: South Dakota's 1,000-plus capacity feedlots reported 175,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on Oct. 1, according to the South Dakota office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 5,000 head from a year earlier but up 10,000 head from a month earlier. Placements during September totaled 56,000 head, up 13,000 head from last year and up 28,000 head from August 2008. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 44,000 head, up 7,000 head from last year and up 12,000 head from August 2008. Other disappearance during September totaled 2,000 head, up 1,000 head from last year and up 1,000 head from August 2008. Nebraska: Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.11 million cattle on feed on Oct. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. This inventory was down 1 percent from last year and 5 percent below Oct. 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 550,000 head, up 2 percent from 2007 and 10 percent above 2006. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 390,000 head, up 22 percent from both last year and two years ago. Other disappearance during September totaled 10,000, the same as last year and 2006. Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on Oct. 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.16 million head, down 6 percent from a year ago but up 3 percent from Sept. 1. Placements during September totaled 485,000 head, down 10 percent from a year ago and 7 percent below August 2008 placements of 520,000 head. Marketings during September totaled 400,000 head, 13 percent above September 2007 but 7 percent below August 2008. Other disappearance was 15,000 head, unchanged from a year ago but up 5,000 from the previous month. The percent of September placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 16 percent; 600-699 pounds, 21 percent; 700-799 pounds, 32 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 31 percent. Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.59 million head on Oct. 1, down 9 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was up slightly from the Sept. 1 level. Producers placed 510,000 head in commercial feedlots during September, down 14 percent from a year ago, but the same number as the August 2008 total. Texas commercial feeders marketed 490,000 head during September, up 2 percent from last year but down 4 percent from last month. On Sept. 1, there were 2.21 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 85 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 9 percent from last year but up 1 percent from the September total. September placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 443,000 head, down 2 percent from the August total. Marketings were down 9 percent from last month to 410,000 head. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 10.4 million head on Oct. 1. This inventory was 5 percent below Oct. 1, 2007. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.28 million head, 6 percent below September 2007. September placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 445,000 head; 600-699 pounds totaled 415,000 head; 700-799 pounds totaled 541,000 head; 800 pounds and greater totaled 880,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.81 million head, 7 percent above 2007. Oklahoma: The inventory of cattle on feed was 315,000 head in Oklahoma on Oct. 1, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, up 3 percent from the previous month but down 3 percent from Oct. 1, 2007. Placements during September were 60,000, 17 percent below one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during September were 49,000, down 13 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during September totaled 1,000 head. United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.4 million head on Oct. 1. The inventory was 5 percent below Oct. 1, 2007 and 9 percent below Oct. 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.28 million, 6 percent below 2007 but 2 percent above 2006. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.81 million, 7 percent above 2007 and 3 percent above 2006.
