Rain limits field workKansas Precipitation was very heavy across the state ending Oct. 26, with many counties receiving 1 inch or more, and some over 4 inches, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Oct. 27. Producers across the state averaged only 2 days suitable for field work for the second week in a row. Topsoil moisture is rated as 1 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 27 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated as 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Primary farm activities involved planting wheat, and harvesting corn, soybeans, sorghum, and sunflowers. Eighty-three percent of the wheat has been planted, compared to 89 percent in 2007 and 92 percent for the 5-year average. Seventy-three percent has emerged, ahead of 68 percent for the previous year but the same as the 5-year average. Wheat condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Sixty percent of the corn has been harvested, compared to 89 percent for last year and 87 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty percent of the sorghum is mature, compared to 96 percent last year and 90 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-six percent has been harvested, compared to 59 percent last year and 53 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated as 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Ninety-four percent of the soybeans are dropping leaves, compared to 99 percent last year and 98 percent for the 5-year average. Sixty percent has been harvested, compared to 64 percent for the previous year and 68 percent for the 5-year average. Seventy-eight percent of the sunflowers are mature, compared to 99 percent for last year and 92 for the 5-year average. Eighteen percent has been harvested, compared to 61 percent in 2007 and 51 percent for the 5-year average.
