Rain, cool weather halts harvest

For the week ending Oct. 26, little harvest progress was made due to heavy rains and cool conditions, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Oct. 27.

Corn harvest is now almost three weeks behind last year and the five year average, while soybean harvest is five days ahead of last year but four days behind the average.

Water was reported to be standing in fields as many areas in the eastern two-thirds of the state have received from 5 to 7 inches of precipitation in the last 30 days. One to 3 inches of snow were reported in the southwest and central parts of the state. High winds late in the week ranged from 40 to 50 miles per hour with gusts of 60 mph or more recorded.

Temperatures averaged 5 degrees below normal across the state and ranged from highs in the lower 70s in the west to lows in the teens in the Panhandle. Precipitation was widespread east of the Panhandle with most districts receiving two inches or more.

Corn conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 23 percent excellent, below last year's 82 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 80 percent good or excellent, well below last year while dryland fields rated 72 percent, near year ago levels. Corn mature was 87 percent, behind last year and the average of 100 percent. Corn harvested was 21 percent complete, nearly three weeks behind last year's 58 percent and the 56 percent average.

Soybean harvest was 82 percent complete, five days ahead of last year's 73 percent but four days behind the 89 percent average.

Sorghum conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 21 percent excellent, well below last year's 86 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum mature was 71 percent, well behind last year's 100 percent and the average of 99 percent. Sorghum harvest was 12 percent complete, behind last year's 49 percent and three weeks behind the 56 percent average.

Winter wheat conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 0 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 69 percent good, and 10 percent excellent, above a year ago levels. Winter wheat emerged was 91 percent, behind last year's 95 percent and 94 percent average.

Proso millet harvest was 96 percent complete, behind last year's 100 percent, but ahead of the 94 percent average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 9 percent excellent, near last year's 62 percent good or excellent condition. Feedlots are very muddy with reduced weight gains noted.
