Pecan harvest nearing in southern NM

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)--Southern New Mexico pecan farmers are gearing up for harvest.

Dona Ana County farmers say recent cold weather is prepping pecans for harvest, which generally starts around Thanksgiving.

New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service pecan specialist Richard Heerema says production across New Mexico will be lower this year.

That's because of what's called an alternate bearing cycle, which means a heavy crop year is followed by a lighter crop the next.

Heerema says the off-year quality tends to be very good because the tree is able to put more energy into the nuts it has.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects New Mexico to produce 45 million pounds of pecans this year, down about 2 percent from the off year of 2006.
