Cotton in mostly good condition, harvest just starting

New Mexico

There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 26, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Oct. 27.

Topsoil moisture was 4 percent very short, 36 percent short, 58 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Wind damage was 5 percent light, 4 percent moderate and 2 percent severe.

Alfalfa was mostly good with sixth cutting 35 percent complete. Cotton was mostly good with 90 percent of bolls opening and 8 percent harvested. Corn was mostly good to excellent with 99 percent mature and 38 percent grain harvested. Irrigated sorghum was mostly good with 71 percent mature and 10 percent harvested. Dry sorghum was mostly fair to poor with 53 percent mature.

Chiles were mostly good with 53 percent of the red harvest completed. Peanuts were mostly good with 50 percent harvested. Pecans ranged from fair to excellent.

Cattle and sheep were mostly good. Range and pastures were mostly fair to good.
