Cool, rainy weather limits row crop harvestingMissouri Another cool, rainy week with 3.7 days suitable for fieldwork limited row crop harvesting over most of the state as the growing season nears its end, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Missouri Field Office, Oct. 27. Drier weather is needed to make progress with corn and soybean harvesting as both continue to fall further behind. Statewide, topsoil moisture rates 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Fall tillage is 30 percent complete, about normal for this time of year. Ninety-six percent of the corn crop is mature, when normally 100 percent is mature. Harvest is 51 percent complete, over a month behind last year and normal. Overall, condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 39 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Ninety percent of the soybean acreage is dropping leaves, and 76 percent is mature, 13 days behind last year and normal. Harvest increased 11 points from last week to 38 percent complete, 15 days behind normal. Soybean condition is rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 36 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Rice harvest is 94 percent complete, two weeks behind last year and 5 days behind normal. Cotton harvest is 77 percent complete, almost two weeks behind last year but 9 days ahead of normal. Eighty-four percent of the sorghum crop is mature, 22 days behind normal. Sorghum harvest is 45 percent complete, almost three weeks behind last year and 25 days behind normal. Sorghum condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Winter wheat is 43 percent planted, 11 days behind last year and 10 days behind normal. Emergence is at 23 percent, 8 days behind normal. Winter wheat condition is rated 2 percent poor, 45 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Pasture condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 54 percent good and 8 percent excellent. 11/3/08 Date: 10/30/08
