Cattle industry opens nominations for 19th Annual Environmental Stewardship Award

The 19th Annual Environmental Stewardship Award officially has opened its nomination season for 2009. The award has recognized the outstanding stewardship practices and conservation achievements of U.S. cattle producers for almost two decades. Regional and national award winners are honored for their commitment to protecting the environment and improving fish and wildlife habitats while operating profitable cattle operations.

"America's cattle operations are dedicated to doing what is right for the environment and it is evident in the 121 operations that the program has recognized since its inception," says Dave Petty, chairman of the selection committee. "This year, we are anticipating another great pool of applicants and encourage your participation in nominating a deserving cattle operation."

Nominations can be submitted by any organization, group, or individual on behalf of a U.S. cattle producer. In the past, nominations have been submitted by a diverse mix of organizations. A partial list includes The Nature Conservancy, the Society for Range Management, federal and state agencies, universities, wildlife organizations and livestock groups.

"This is always a great program, which gets a great deal of attention. So, if you haven't had a chance to nominate someone in the past, now's the time. You have from now until Feb. 25, 2009 to get your application and nomination ready," says Petty. "This program has inspired cattle producers to try new techniques utilized by the winners, and it continues to reward innovators for their stewardship. It also exhibits to the world how producers are the original, true environmentalists."

Established in 1991, the award is presented by the National Cattlemen's Foundation in cooperation with Dow AgroSciences LLC, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Seven regional winners and one national winner are selected annually by a committee of representatives from universities, conservation organizations, and federal and state agencies. The nominees compete for regional awards based on their state of residency, and these seven regional winners then compete for the national award. . National winner will be selected at the 2009 Cattle Industry Convention in Phoenix.

The deadline for 2009 nomination packet is Feb. 25, 2009. Go to www.EnvironmentalStewardship.org to download a nomination packet or contact the National Cattlemen's Foundation to request a copy of the application at 303-694-0305.
