Beef Checkoff Modernization Act beneficial to producers

Kansas

Kansas Cattlemen's Association is pleased that legislation was introduced in Washington that will help promote USA beef and USA producers. In early October, Senator Tester of Montana introduced the Beef Checkoff Modernization Act. This legislation requires at least 30 percent of Beef Checkoff money to be used to promote USA beef, allows cattle producers to hold a referendum every seven years, or sooner if petitioned, to change the Beef Checkoff, and allows industry organizations not around at the time the Beef Checkoff was enacted to bid for contracts to promote USA Beef.

Cattle rancher and KCA Director, Hal Luthi remarked, "Finally a piece of legislation that shows the people in Washington believe in the American producer and our ability to market the finest food in the world. It will be a test of commitment to the American producer from Congress and particularly our Kansas delegation."

"Last year, Kansas Cattlemen's Association went to the Kansas statehouse to advocate for legislation to promote USA beef. This has been a priority for producers for a number of years, and they want to see their checkoff dollars used to promote their product. We are very happy to see legislation like this introduced, and KCA is already speaking with our senators and representatives to stress the importance of this bill," stated KCA Executive Director Brandy Carter.

Senate Bill 3404, the Beef Checkoff Modernization Act, will be closely monitored by KCA and should producers have questions, they are welcome to contact the KCA office at 785-238-1483.
