Area 4-H'ers collect H.U.G.S. to celebrate 4-H monthOklahoma Staying warm during an Oklahoma winter isn't all that easy. That's why 4-H'ers from Oklahoma County area clubs are collecting H.U.G.S. for kids who need them. H.U.G.S. are new hats, underwear, gloves and socks that will be collected by 4-H clubs and later donated to groups and organizations that can get them to local children in need. "We decided a couple of years ago to celebrate national 4-H month, which is in October, by doing something for the kids in our community," commented Kyle Worthington, Oklahoma County 4-H Youth educator. "We can't believe how successful this has been and how many people have helped." Last year, 4-H'ers collected H.U.G.S. for children attending Positive Horizons, a school for homeless children, for the Infant Crisis Center and for Citizens Caring for Children, an organization that helps foster children. The Oklahoma County H.U.G.S. program also won a national award for its community effort from the Coalgate Foundation. "Sometimes it's hard for families on limited incomes to stretch their dollars to include some warm secondary clothing for winter," April Adams, also a 4-H Youth Educator for the Oklahoma County 4-H program, explained. "H.U.G.S. just helps them out some. We want to make sure that when the first snows come, kids in our community have hats and gloves to enjoy it and stay warm." Site locations for donating H.U.G.S. include the elected officials' offices at the Oklahoma County Courthouse, the county election board, and the OSU Extension Center, located at 930 N. Portland in Oklahoma City. Individual 4-H clubs will also be establishing pick-up sites throughout the metro area.
