Two men to be rewarded for help in solving 2007 grain theft caseKansas The Kansas Grain and Feed Association will be presenting two cash rewards through its Grain Theft Reward Program to the men instrumental in the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the 2007 grain thefts at the Syracuse Cooperative Exchange in Syracuse, Kan. Jerald Kemmerer, KGFA chairman, will present two rewards totaling $3,800 to Mike Schmidt, grain manager for Syracuse Coop, and Matt Overturf, grain division manager for Skyland Grain. Both men played vital roles in helping the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Hamilton County Sheriff solve this case. Their assistance resulted in the recent arrest and conviction of three people. Schmidt and Overturf will be receiving their rewards Nov. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita, Kan., during the 2008 Kansas Agri Business Expo. KGFA recently revitalized its Grain Theft Reward Program to help discourage grain thefts from elevators due to the dramatic rise in recent grain prices. The original program paid up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person responsible for the theft of commodities from a member's facility. However, in January the KGFA Board of Directors decided to increase the potential reward amount from $1,000 to $10,000. The purpose of this program is to: --Encourage community interest in and concern for an elevator's operating procedure so that criminal activity is more readily noticed and reported. --Enhance employee allegiance to their workplace and therein their concern for its well being. --Encourage persons knowledgeable of contemplated grain thievery to come forward with information. --Discourage the contemplation of grain theft by displaying the offer of a $10,000 reward at all member facilities. The Grain Theft Reward Program has been in existence since 1983, and two awards have been given out since then. In 1983, KGFA rewarded Marvin Wentz of Atchison County Coop with $1,000 for his efforts in helping police capture four men responsible for the Memorial Day grain theft from their river terminal. In 1996, KGFA rewarded Steven Kuplen, a customer of KAMO Grain in Pittsburg, with $250 for his help in the conviction of an individual who stole over $4,000 worth of soybeans from the KAMO elevator. 11/24/08 Date: 11/20/08 Advertisement
