Overton pesticide re-certification training set Dec. 2 and 4

Topics will include hogs, mosquitoes and pastures management

There should be subjects that interest at the two upcoming pesticide applicator trainings, slated Dec. 2 and 4, at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton.

Plus, pesticide applicators will earn 5 1/2 continuing education units toward re-certification of their Texas Department of Agriculture licenses, said Dr. Billy Higginbotham, Texas AgriLife Extension Service wildlife and fisheries specialist and one of the program's organizers.

"We've tried to change things up a bit to keep it interesting for those who come back every year," Higginbotham said. "And we've tried to be timely. I think they will find Dr. Banta's presentation on Hurricane Ike issues in regards to cattle and pastures particularly interesting."

Applicators who attend the entire course on either day will earn one continuing education unit in laws and regulations, two in integrated pest management and 2 1/2 in the general category, Higginbotham said.

Registration for either day will be $25 and will include a barbecue lunch catered by Stacy's Bar-B-Q of Jacksonville. Registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The training is scheduled to conclude at 2:45 p.m.

Topics and speakers will include:

--External Parasites on Beef Cattle and Hurricane Ike Issues, Dr. Jason Banta, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist;

--Pasture Weed Control and Other Agronomic Issues, Dr. Vanessa Corriher, AgriLife Extension forage specialist;

--Ornamental Plant Research Update, Dr. Brent Pemberton, Texas AgriLife Research horticulturist;

--Mosquitoes, Ticks and Animal Bites: Disease Implications on the Farm and Ranch, Dr. James Wright, Regional Veterinarian, Texas Department of Health;

--Entomology Update and Fire Ant Management, Dr. Scott Ludwig, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management specialist; and

--Feral Hog Control/Laws Update, Higginbotham.
