Oklahoma State's Jeff Hattey receives national teaching award

Oklahoma

Oklahoma State University's Jeff Hattey has been named a 2008 recipient of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award.

The honor is one of six regional teaching awards presented by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. Hattey was officially recognized during a Nov. 9 ceremony at the annual meeting of NASULGC in Chicago.

"We're thrilled that Dr. Hattey's hard work and dedication to excellence in teaching has been recognized nationally with this great honor," said Dave Porter, head of OSU's department of plant and soil sciences.

Hattey, who serves as director of the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Environmental Sciences Program, will receive a $2,000 stipend to support his instructional efforts, as well as a handmade plaque.

"Jeff has an extraordinary ability to bring out the best in his students," Porter said. "Many of the high-quality graduates he has produced through the years have gone on to do great things for the college, university and Oklahoma."

An OSU faculty member since 1994, Hattey is active in the university's ongoing assessment of student learning in higher education. His major research focus is in the field of animal waste management.

Hattey's professional affiliations include the American Society of Agronomy, Council of Environmental Deans and Directors, National Council on Science and the Environment, North America Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture and Soil Science Society of America.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Central Missouri State University in 1985. Hattey earned his master's degree and doctoral degree from the University of Arkansas in 1988 and 1993, respectively.
