McAlester livestock sales report

The McAlester Union Livestock Market, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 3,815 head Nov. 18, compared to 2,480 head last week and 2,500 head last year, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, lightweight calves were $8 to $10 lower, with 400- to 600-pound calves $2 to $5 lower. Feeder cattle were $2 to $4 lower. The economy and job losses were major concerns to the livestock industry. Cattle were in thin to fleshy condition with many soft calves in trade. Receipts consisted of 50% steers, 43% heifers with 27% feeder cattle over 600 pounds. Slaughter cows and bulls were steady. There was a good attendance of buyers and active trade. A total of 390 cows sold with 65% to packers.

Light, 52 head, 85 to 90% lean, 700 to 1005 lbs., 30.00 to 33.50; high dressing, 41.00 to 46.50; low dressing, 25.50 to 29.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 21 head, 1375 to 1900 lbs., 59.50 to 63.00; high dressing 64.50; low dressing, 54.50 to 58.00.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 2 to 6 years old, 875 to 1325 lbs., 4 to 6 months bred, average quality, 670.00 to 735.00.
