Lea County ranchers can apply for restoration help

HOBBS, N.M. (AP)--The U.S. Department of Agriculture is making $1.2 million available to Lea County farmers and ranchers to help restore grasslands after a series of wildfires earlier this year.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-NM, announced the allocation Nov. 13.

Lea County had two disaster declarations after more than 70 grass fires in the county scorched an estimated 70,000 acres.

The funding, part of a $77 million effort to repair farmland damaged by natural disasters, can be used to remove farmland debris, restore fences and repair conservation structures damaged by the fires.
