Kansas governor seeks federal help for western county

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP)--Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is seeking an agricultural disaster designation for Sherman County.

In a letter Nov. 6, Sebelius told U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer that drought, excessive heat, high winds and hail ravaged the western Kansas county between January and August. She says the severe weather hampered corn, sorghum, wheat, sunflower and pasture grass production.

The weather also damaged farm buildings and irrigation equipment.

The disaster designation would make farmers and ranchers eligible for low-interest loans and other aid.
