Kansas Natural Resources Conference set Jan. 29 and 30 in WichitaKansas On Jan. 29 and 30, 2009, six professional societies and several other organizations that promote the wise use and management of Kansas' natural resources are sponsoring the second Kansas Natural Resources Conference at the Airport Hilton in Wichita. The theme of the conference is "Renewable Energy-Renewable Resources." Early registration is open until Jan. 8, 2009. "You need to mark your calendar and register for this conference," said Dan Meyerhoff, steering committee chairperson. "Registration information is available on the Internet at the website www.kansasnrc.net. Those interested in the conference theme should find that the conference speakers, concurrent sessions, and tradeshow will provide a variety of information about energy." "The call for oral and poster papers is now open with abstracts due Dec. 1," said Charles Barden, presentation chairman. "Last year we had over 50 presentations and we hope to have even more this year with a theme that is so timely." "We especially encourage presentations related to the management and impact of renewable energy development; however, any and all natural resource topics will be considered," said Barden. "We encourage professionals and students to present on any natural resource-related topic of importance to Kansas and the region." Detailed information for submitting presentations is on the website. The plenary session speakers will address the conference theme: --Chris Risbrudt is the director of the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory located in Madison, Wis. The lab is the nation's foremost wood research center and has produced many innovations in uses of wood and wood science. --Craig Cox is the Midwest vice president of Environmental Working Group based out of Iowa. Craig is an authority on the impacts of agricultural practices on soil, water, and wildlife resources, and the risks that climate change and expanded biofuels production pose to these resources. --Brian Obermeyer is the director of The Nature Conservancy's Flint Hills Initiative, a community-based effort to preserve the last landscape expression of tallgrass prairie in North America. Brian works with ranchers, landowners and other stakeholders to help preserve the biological integrity of this unique region. --Brad Loveless is the chairman of the Westar Energy Green Team and the manager of Westar Energy's Biology and Conservation Programs based in Topeka. Westar Energy is the largest supplier of electricity in Kansas. Brad and Brian will team up to present issues related to wind and wings- site concerns for locating windfarms. "The conference is unique," said Harold Klaege, chair of the tradeshow committee, "as it is the only conference where all of these professional natural resource specialists in Kansas get together and discuss natural resource issues. There is no better place for your organization to display your products or services. Professionals attending the conference can learn about your products or services and then in their normal contacts with Kansas landowners and operators suggest your product or services." Conference brochure, registration form, concurrent session topics, tradeshow exhibiting information, committee chairs, and hotel information is available at www.kansasnrc.com or, contact Dan Meyerhoff, at 785-625-2588 or e-mail at KNRC@kaws.org The sponsors of the conference are the Kansas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, Society of American Foresters, Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, the Great Plains Society of American Foresters, Kansas Chapter of the Wildlife Society, the Kansas Section of the Society of Range Management, Kansas Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society, and Kansas Association of County Agricultural Agents. 11/24/08 Date: 11/20/08 Advertisement
