KFB honors Teagarden for distinguished service to agriculture

Kansas Livestock Commissioner George Teagarden honored at KFB annual meeting

Kansas

Kansas Livestock Commissioner George Teagarden, Linn County, was honored with the 2008 Kansas Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Agriculture award Nov. 8, at Kansas Farm Bureau's 90th annual meeting, Manhattan.

The KFB Distinguished Service to Agriculture award is presented to individuals who exemplify leadership in agriculture, service to Farm Bureau families and community involvement.

"It's hard to measure the impact that George Teagarden has had on the lives of Kansas farmers and ranchers, but it's significant," said Steve Baccus, an Ottawa County grain producer who serves as president of Kansas Farm Bureau. "We are honored to be able to recognize the lifelong accomplishments and professional contributions of this outstanding Kansas agriculture advocate."

Teagarden was raised on a family farm in Linn County where he owns land and livestock. He serves as Livestock Commissioner for Kansas Animal Health Department, a position he's held since 1994.

At KAHD, Teagarden leads a team to ensure the public health, safety and welfare of Kansas' citizens through prevention, control and eradication of infectious and contagious disease and conditions affecting the health of livestock and domestic animals in Kansas.

A 1966 graduate of Kansas State University, with a degree in animal husbandry, he remains a dedicated advocate for animal health in Kansas.

He and wife of 41 years, Loretta, have three children and six grandchildren. From 1981 to 1994, Teagarden served in the Kansas House of Representatives.

Kansas Farm Bureau represents grassroots agriculture. Established in 1919, this non-profit advocacy organization supports farm families who earn their living in a changing industry.
