Geologic map details parts of 11 northeast Nebraska counties

Nebraska

A new map available from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln details many of the geologic features of all or parts of 11 northeast Nebraska counties. The colorful map and accompanying pamphlet are the result of years of study and research, its primary author said.

"The map and pamphlet contain a huge amount of geologic information on northeast Nebraska and are the result of years of research by the authors," said retired UNL geologist Bob Diffendal of the Conservation and Survey Division, part of UNL's School of Natural Resources.

The "Geologic Map of the O'Neill 1 x 2 Quadrangle," as the map is known, covers all or parts of Antelope, Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Garfield, Knox, Loup, Holt, Keya Paha, Rock and Wheeler counties, which includes parts of northeast Nebraska, parts of the Nebraska Sandhills and parts of the Missouri, Niobrara and Loup River watersheds.

The color map, and its accompanying 29-page brochure, detail the surface areas of all currently recognized geologic formations exposed across the region, as well as sites of possible earthquake faults, locations of some landslides, volcanic ash sites, and some gravel pits and quarries.

The pamphlet has contour maps of the tops of major formations buried beneath the land surface, a revised bedrock map of the area, descriptions of previous geologic works, geologic history, detailed descriptions of each of the formations and a list of major reference works on various aspects of the geology of the area.

Illustrations are in full color. The 25-inch, by 36-inch map is published at a scale of 1:250,000, or one inch on the map equals about 3.95 miles, Diffendal said.

Print copies of the map and accompanying brochure are available for $22, plus shipping and handling, from UNL's Nebraska Maps and More store on the first floor of Hardin Hall, northeast corner of North 33rd and Holdrege streets, UNL East Campus, Lincoln. They may also be ordered online at http://nebraskamaps.unl.edu, or e-mail snrsales@unl.edu or phone 402-472-3471. A CD-ROM version of the map is available for $7.

Map co-authors with Diffendal are M.R. Voorhies, UNL Department of Geosciences; E. Jane Voorhies, Lincoln; H.E. LaGarry, Department of Physical and Life Sciences, Oglala Lakota College, Kyle, S.D.; C.L. Timperley, Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas; and M.E. Perkins, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.
