Ford County Extension Appreciation, News Media awards presented

Kansas

The 2008 recipients of the Ford County Extension Appreciation Award were Dan Schnitker of Cargill and Mary Lett. Schnitker and Lett received their awards recently during the Ford County Extension Council's election meeting which was held Oct. 30 at the Ford County Fair Building.

Mary Lett has been involved with the Ford County Extension program for the past ten years. She has devoted her time, knowledge and skills to the success of the annual Christmas Fantasies program held at the Dodge City Senior Center. Lett's vision, guidance and hard work has helped provide a fun, but very educational holiday program. Each year she has put together unique recipe books and decorating ideas for people to use.

As general manager of Cargill, Dan Schnitker, has shown his support of Extension in several ways. Schnitker has allowed our 4-H Beef Project animals to be processed at the plant after the county fair. Cargill's staff work with our Extension agents to allow data to be collected, pictures of the carcasses taken and provide awards for the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion winners. Our county is extremely lucky to have Schnitker and his staff willing to work with our local program. Cargill also provides financial and product support for Extension programs, such as 4-H Achievement Banquet and the County Fair Hamburger Feeds.

The Extension Council Appreciation Award is presented to an individual, couple or organization who has given a considerable amount of extra effort in support of the Extension Council educational programs. In many cases, their hard work and dedication has lightened the load for the Extension Service personnel, in addition to making the Extension Council's efforts more effective. The success of Extension programs depends on the unselfish energy of such people who have spent considerable time supporting our endeavors for no monetary rewards. Their service and support is greatly appreciated.

Extension Council awards News Media Award to Rocking M Radio

The Extension Council's job is to disseminate information in the fields of agriculture production and marketing, conservation of natural resources, family and consumer science education and youth development and economic development. In order to accomplish this endeavor, we utilize a variety of means to get information to the public. One such method is through the mass media channels including radio, newspaper, television and news letters. The News Media Award was established to recognize an individual or organization for their support in promoting our educational programs. This year's award went to Rocking M Radio station in Dodge City.

The Rocking M Radio station is a very strong supporter of all Ford County Extension programs. They are always willing to run news releases of upcoming meetings and workshops but they also work with the Extension agents by allowing them to promote programs with Keith Tallent on his morning show on KGNO. The station allows 4-Hers to record PSA's promoting 4-H, National 4-H Week, County Fair, etc. Rocking M Radio 96.3 provided a live remote from the county fair in 2008 allowing several 4-Hers to have a chance to promote 4-H and the fair. This past year, the station worked with our 4-H program by providing booth space for a "Kiddie Corral" during the Dodge City Days Roundup Rodeo to promote 4-H.
