Public invited to Arroyo watershed workshopSet for Nov. 20 in Rio Grande Valley Texas Rio Grande Valley residents interested in helping restore one of the area's most important bodies of water, the Arroyo Colorado, are urged to attend a free, one-day educational workshop on Nov. 20. Sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service in partnership with several other state agencies, the workshop is designed to help watershed residents improve and protect their water resources by getting involved in local watershed protection and management activities, an AgriLife Extension official said. "We're hoping residents from all walks of life consider attending the upcoming Texas Watershed Steward training to learn more about their watershed and ways to protect the special beauty and water quality of the Arroyo Colorado," said Jennifer Peterson, an AgriLife Extension water quality program specialist. Peterson said Hidalgo County is home to portions of the Arroyo Colorado watershed that not only serves as a natural drainage system for the Valley, but also is a wildlife habitat in distress. "The watershed is a 700 square mile area of land that drains water into the Arroyo Colorado, a 90-mile stretch of water that flows to the Laguna Madre in the Gulf of Mexico," she said. "The Arroyo is used for a variety of purposes and provides valuable habitat for many types of aquatic plants and animals." But the Arroyo is not without environmental problems that led the state to list it as an impaired waterway, she said. "Elevated bacteria concentrations, low dissolved oxygen levels and high levels of nutrients in the Arroyo have prompted state and federal agencies and local governments to take action in an effort to reduce concentrations and improve its water quality," Peterson said. "By attending this workshop, residents can learn how they can be a part of the solution for the Arroyo Colorado." The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Rio Farms, 25601 North FM 88 in Monte Alto, north of Weslaco. In addition to AgriLife Extension, the workshop will be hosted by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, the Texas Water Resources Institute and the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership.
