Mike Kubicek honored as OSU distinguished ag alumOklahoma
Mike Kubicek, executive director of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, has been named a 2008 recipient of the Oklahoma State University Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Award. His success as the leader of Oklahoma's peanut industry has elevated him to the national and international stage of commodity research, production and marketing. "The successes of our agriculture alumni are appreciated by everyone representing all three aspects of the division: the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and our two state agencies, the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station system and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service," said Robert E. Whitson, DASNR vice president, dean and director. Whitson said Kubicek and his fellow distinguished agriculture alumni are held in the highest regard, in part because OSU agriculture and natural resource students can face positive futures from the strong examples created by such role models. "They are truly pioneers in their respective fields of agriculture," he said. Kubicek has long been associated with DASNR programs, having joined the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service after earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in agronomy from OSU in 1970 and 1972, respectively. He served as Alfalfa County Extension director and as a Texas County 4-H agent. In 1975, Kubicek became a special agent with Oklahoma Farm Bureau, and then was named assistant director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission in 1979. He was named OWC's executive director in 1981, serving until 1990 when he rejoined the bureau. In 1993, Kubicek was named executive secretary of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission. "Mike Kubicek's excellent leadership and deep commitment to Oklahoma agriculture is legend around the state and nation," said Dave Porter, head of the division's department of plant and soil sciences. As a member of the commission, he led the team effort to "fast track" High Oleic peanut variety development in the southwestern United States, coordinated farmer-funded peanut research, enhanced relationships with legislators and commodity groups and started the annual Oklahoma Peanut Expo. "We are so proud of all the great things Mike has done," Porter said. "His receiving this award is very special to all of us. His tireless efforts in promoting the division and OSU have strengthened our programs and helped put all of Oklahoma on a solid path to prosperity for the future." Mike and Kianna Kubicek operate Econtuchka Farms, located in Oklahoma's Econtuchka Bottom, northeast of Shawnee. They have one son and three grandchildren. Joining Kubicek as 2008 OSU distinguished agriculture alumni are Joe Neal Hampton of the Oklahoma Seed Trade Association and Oklahoma Agribusiness Retailers Association, and the late Clem McSpadden, the "voice of rodeo" for generations of farm and ranch families around the world. 11/17/08 Date: 11/13/08 Advertisement
