Mexican manufacturers return to Texas for annual peanut tourTexas
Twenty-two Mexican food manufacturer representatives made the trip to Texas Oct. 27 to 29 for the American Peanut Council and Texas Peanut Producers Board's annual Fall Harvest Tour. The purpose of the tour is to lend key Mexican manufacturers insight on how and where the peanuts they purchase are grown, harvested and shelled. Mexico is one of the largest importers of U.S. and Texas peanuts. While in South Texas, the tour made stops at the Wilco shelling facility in Pleasanton, buying points in the area and peanut fields that were being dug and thrashed near Pearsall. "This is an excellent opportunity to continue the great relationship between the Texas peanut industry and our Mexican manufacturers," said Shelly Nutt, TPPB executive director. "Through the years of doing these tours we've been able to develop wonderful business connections and friendships between the manufacturers and U.S. shellers and growers that have ensured a consistent peanut export market to Mexico." Hector Garcia, manager of national purchases of food and ice creams for the Mexican-based Bokados Foods in Santa Catarina, attended the tour for a fifth straight year. "We want the best quality peanut for the food products we manufacture," he said. "Texas and APC are always appreciative of our support as buyers." TPPB Vice Chairman Larry Don Womack of DeLeon said the tour is a necessity in maintaining relationships with importers of Texas peanuts. "I think it's important for us to show our international buyers where the peanuts they buy come from, and the effort we put into producing a quality peanut," Womack said. "The tour is always a big success." TPPB directors Clifton Stacy of Pearsall and Jimmy Seay of Pleasanton also attended the tour along with U.S. peanut industry representatives from Birdsong Peanuts, Wilco and The Clint Williams Company. The tour wraps up the second international buyer tour held in Texas this October. 11/17/08 Date: 11/11/08 Advertisement
