KFB honors Coen for Distinguished Service to Agriculture

Morton County producer Floyd Coen honored at KFB annual meeting

Kansas

Morton County farmer Floyd Coen was honored with the 2008 Kansas Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Agriculture award Nov. 8, at Kansas Farm Bureau's 90th annual meeting, Manhattan.

The KFB Distinguished Service to Agriculture award is presented to individuals who exemplify leadership in agriculture, service to Farm Bureau families and community involvement.

"Every farmer and rancher in Kansas owes a debt of gratitude to Floyd Coen and every other producer of his generation," said Steve Baccus, an Ottawa County grain producer who serves as president of Kansas Farm Bureau. "We are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize the lifelong accomplishments and contributions of this outstanding Kansas farm leader."

Coen kept his family farm moving forward on a farm deferment at age 18 while his four brothers served in World War II.

His motto, "If you don't think something is right, work to change it," can be seen through his life-long work and achievements.

Coen has been a Farm Bureau member for 60 years, served on the Kansas State Board of Agriculture for 24 years and the Kansas State Fair Board for 25 years. He was a 4-H leader for 25 years, and served in the Kansas House of Representatives in 1963.

Among Coen's many honors are the Distinguished Jayhawker Award; Friends of County Agents State Award; Master Farmer/Master Homemaker Award; Induction into Kansas Fairs Association Hall Of Fame; Honorary State FFA Degree- Kansas; Induction into Kansas Polled Hereford Association Hall Of Fame; honored as founding member of Morton County Fair Board; Pacesetter Award for outstanding participation as an Elkhart Ambassador and Pioneer Man of the Year awarded by Morton County Historical Society.

Kansas Farm Bureau represents grassroots agriculture. Established in 1919, this non-profit advocacy organization supports farm families who earn their living in a changing industry.
