Century Feeders recognized with Red Angus Industry Service Award

Kansas

Century Feeders, Inc., of Goodland, Kan., received the 2008 Red Angus Industry Service Award at the National Red Angus Convention in Cheyenne, Wyo., Sept. 17 to 19. Frank Wedel, past Red Angus Association of America president and fellow cattle feeder, presented the award to Dick and Sarah Short.

Century Feeders, Inc. is a 10,000-head feedlot located in northwestern Kansas. At first glance, it looks like a lot of the other feedlots that dot the landscape of Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and the Panhandle. "It is extremely neat and well kept with a leg-and-bunker silo and an office that gets dusty when the wind blows," said Wedel.

But there is something different about Century. First, they are aggressive in their pursuit of Red Angus genetics whether they are calves or feeders. Second, they are also very vocal in their support and appreciation of Red Angus cattle and the ranchers with whom they establish relationships. And third, Century also knows how to feed cattle.

In fact, since the GridMaster Awards were established in 2003, 42 lots of cattle have been identified for their carcass excellence. Of those 42 lots, 14 have been fed at Century Feeders, Inc.--one-third of the GridMaster award winners.

The status of GridMaster is highly sought after among Red Angus feeders.

The GridMaster score balances high percentages of premium products, yield grade 1s and 2s and USDA Choice-grade cattle with minimal percentages of yield grade 4s.
