12,500 Limousin cows now on whole-herd reporting

More than 12,500 cows in 129 herds now are part of the voluntary Limousin Inventory Management System. Sixteen herds joined the North American Limousin Foundation's whole-herd reporting program in fiscal year 2007-2008, adding about 925 head.

Beginning with their 2006 calf crops, active NALF members have had the option of conducting business using the Web-based LIMS. Participants pay an annual, per cow fee that entitles them to record, register and transfer the cow's calf for that year.

"The system helps NALF members lower their costs of doing business with the association," said Lauren Hyde, Ph.D., director of performance programs for NALF. "Meanwhile, they contribute more complete and comprehensive production information that leads to inventory-proven genetics backed by more accurate EPDs (expected progeny differences)."

Active NALF members can enroll in LIMS by first accessing their secured, members-only portions of the NALF website (www.nalf.org/members). Once logged in to their own member sites, they simply click the LIMS button at the top of any page to begin the sign-up process.

Limousin breeders wanting to enroll spring-calving cows in LIMS must do so by Feb. 15 each year. July 15 is the annual deadline for enrolling fall-calving cows.

NALF members associated with the new LIMS herds for 2007-2008 follow by state and hometown.

The Limousin breed and its Lim-Flex hybrid lead the beef industry in muscle-growth efficiency and ideally complement British breeds.
