Vets back Yellowstone-area livestock disease planGREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP)--Montana's state veterinarian says a national animal health group is backing the creation of a special livestock disease management zone around Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone region of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming is the last remaining reservoir of brucellosis in the United States. The disease, which causes cows to abort their calves, persists in wildlife including elk and bison. Transmissions to cattle in the last several years have triggered costly restrictions on livestock exports in states that had at least two infections. Montana veterinarian Marty Zaluski says the U.S. Animal Health Association passed a resolution at its annual meeting Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C., that could prompt new federal rules limiting such restrictions to just the Yellowstone area. The association is made up of state and federal veterinarians, biologists and livestock industry representatives. 11/10/08 Date: 11/5/08
