UNL Dean of Extension inducted into USDA agency's Hall of Fame

Nebraska

Elbert Dickey, dean and director of University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, has been inducted into a U.S. Department of Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Dickey is among the 2008 inductees into USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service Hall of Fame.

Dickey, an Illinois native, has been dean and director of UNL Extension since 2001, after serving as interim for about two years. Previously, he was associate dean of UNL Extension from 1998-1999 and assistant dean from 1991-1998. His career at UNL began in 1978 in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering; he was promoted to professor in 1987. Prior to arriving at UNL, he was a research assistant at the University of Illinois and worked in agricultural production in Wayne County, Ill.

On the national level, Dickey served as extension and education adviser to CSREES from 2005-2007, a half-time appointment. He also was secretary, vice chair and chair of the governing board of directors of eXtension, a pioneering, nationwide, Internet-based extension program.

As dean of extension, Dickey presides over a statewide system that includes offices in 83 counties.

Extension is a division of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Dickey is the second IANR representative inducted into the CSREES hall of fame. Martin Massengale, former president of the University of Nebraska and now director of UNL's Center for Grassland Studies, was inducted in 2004.

CSREES, the USDA's chief research and education agency, created the hall of fame in 2004 to "recognize outstanding work by an individual who has advocated and supported the fundamental efforts of CSREES to integrate research, education and extension in fulfilling the agency's mission to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being and communities." It is a peer-nominated award.
