Police catch cattle rustling suspect

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP)--Authorities have caught a Porum man they think has stolen cattle, trucks and trailers in eastern Oklahoma during October.

Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson said Christopher Allen Mann, 35, was arrested after someone recognized the truck Mann was driving as being stolen.

Pearson said Mann led authorities on a chase that also involved the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and police from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The chase went west of Muskogee and into areas near Boynton and Wainwright.

Mann had been pulling a trailer with eight stolen cattle in it, and abandoned those items on a ranch near Wainwright. Pearson said that as Mann fled, he set fires on the ranch in an attempt to keep lawmen occupied.

"This guy has been giving us fits for the last month," Pearson said. "He took us on a pretty good chase--all the way to Boynton and through the backwoods of Wainwright. It was an intense deal."

Pearson said that Mann abandoned a rifle on Oct. 27 and authorities found bullets in Mann's pockets when he was arrested.

The sheriff said Mann is cooperating with authorities and has shown them places in eastern Oklahoma where he had hidden the items he'd stolen during the last four weeks. Deputy and Sheriff's Investigator Jeff Smith said eight stolen trailers were expected to be recovered on Oct. 27.

Officials said that since Oct. 23, Mann had stolen three trailers from one salvage business and a four-wheeler from the Keefeton area that he used to round up stolen cattle. They said some of those cattle have already been sold.

Pearson said authorities still are looking for about 60 to 70 stolen cattle.

"We've also got paperwork showing where he had been taking things to the pawn shop," Pearson said.

Muskogee County court records show that Mann already had a Nov. 7 preliminary hearing set in a May 2008 felony case of knowingly concealing stolen property and false ownership declaration in pawn.
