Nebraska meatpacker cutting 20 jobs, exec says

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)--The Lincoln meatpacking operation of Premium Protein Products will be eliminating 20 jobs, its president and chairman said Oct. 20.

Steve Sands said the employees will be axed over the next four weeks.

Sands said earlier Oct. 20 that 30 to 40 workers would be affected.

The 20 job losses will occur only at the company's Lincoln plant, Sands said, and will take the staff down to 20 in the plant and 25 in corporate offices.

His Hastings operation is not affected, Sands said. It's grown over the last couple of years to about 350 workers from 150, he said.

What's causing the job cuts?

Sands said the company was eliminating some chicken cooking because of lower margins in food service and will instead focus on its core beef products.

Premium Protein specializes in slaughtering and processing meat products from verified sources.
