MU Extension's 'Rural Living 101' to help ex-urbanites adjust to the not-so-simple life

Missouri

Families moving from cities and suburbs into the country often arrive with little understanding of the laws and customs of rural life. To help them in their transition, University of Missouri Extension is offering an informal "Rural Living 101" class on Nov. 3 and 10 in Nevada.

"We are addressing the non-rural population moving to rural areas," said Wayne Prewitt, Vernon County Extension agricultural business specialist. "A lot of them do not understand what issues they may face and how to best get along with their neighbors."

"Good fences make good neighbors," wrote the poet Robert Frost. However, Prewitt notes, "Not everybody has good fences. Very few people understand fence laws. Misunderstandings about who is responsible for what can lead to squabbles."

Another flash point is family dogs running on other people's property.

In addition to fence law and animal liability, the class will cover issues such as safe use of pesticides, land rental agreements and taking stock of resources, he said.

The class will also help new residents understand and work with local government for things like road improvement.

"We get questions of who do we call to get our road fixed," he said. In Vernon County, for example, townships rather than the county government are responsible for maintaining gravel roads. New residents should also know that road taxation varies among townships, he said.

The Vernon County clerk and a representative from the Missouri Department of Conservation will give presentations and answer questions. The class will also include MU Extension agronomy and livestock specialists.

Classes run 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Nevada TeleCenter, 1015 N. West Street, Nevada. Registration is $35. To register or for more information, call the Vernon County Extension office at 417-448-2560.
