Larson to receive Kansas Dairy Leader Award

Kansas

Steven A. Larson, the managing editor of Hoard's Dairyman magazine, will be honored with the 30th Kansas Dairy Leader Award by the Kansas Dairy Interbreed Council and the Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.

The award, which dates back to 1952, will be given at the Kansas Dairy Association's annual meeting at the Holiday Inn in Salina Dec. 13.

Hoard's Dairyman is the only paid dairy magazine in circulation with more than 80,000 subscribers, said Jeff Stevenson, K-State animal science professor.

Larson, who is a Kansas native, has been with the magazine since 1969. He first served as associate editor and became managing editor in 1998. Over the years, he has been invited to make presentations in 29 states, three Canadian provinces, and Mexico.

His day-to-day duties, Stevenson said, involve overseeing the magazine's coverage of milk marketing, dairy policy, dairy product promotion, feeding and nutrition, and herd health.

"Steven Larson has campaigned vigorously for a strong, dairy-farmer-funded product promotion and research effort, as well as supported national, voluntary, industry-controlled programs to improve incomes of U.S. dairy farm families," Stevenson said. "He has served on advisory committees for the National Dairy Leaders Conference, Western Dairy Management Conference, the U.S. Forage Research Center, the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, and is a former director and past president of the National Dairy Shrine."

Larson, who lives in Fort Atkinson, Wis., holds degrees from Kansas State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
