Jiang honored as 2008 Whatley Award recipient

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma State University Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources' has named Haobo Jiang its 2008 recipient of the James A. Whatley Award for Meritorious Research in Agricultural Sciences.

Jiang, an associate professor in the department of entomology and plant pathology, was honored for his groundbreaking work on improving scientific understanding of insect immune systems.

Junpeng Deng, OSU assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, lauded Jiang's research on the transmission of diseases that potentially can menace both humans and animals.

"The significance of Dr. Jiang's work cannot be overemphasized," Deng said.

The National Institutes of Health agree, having provided OSU with $1.8 million in grant funding to support Jiang's research.

Jiang has authored or co-authored more than 65 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Nearly 40 of those have come since joining the OSU faculty in 2000.

"Haobo Jiang has developed an international reputation as a leader in the field of insect immunity," said Jack Dillwith, OSU professor of entomology and plant pathology. "He is truly one of the best young scientists at the university."

It is a level of success that has impressed Jiang's own major professor who oversaw his graduate work, Michael Kanost, biochemistry department head at Kansas State University. Jiang earned his doctoral degree from KSU in 1994.

"I am extremely impressed with Haobo Jiang's scientific talents and proud that he got his start in my laboratory," Kanost wrote in a letter of nomination. "He combines a fine intellect with intense effort and meticulous attention to detail that has led to continuing success and very high productivity."

Jiang has become a highly sought-after mentor in his own right, graduating three M.S. and two Ph.D. students during his time at OSU. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His professional affiliations include the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Entomological Society of America.

The division award is presented annually in honor of Whatley, a 41-year faculty member at OSU who served as director of the statewide Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station system and then as dean and director of the entire division, which is comprised of the experiment station; another state agency, the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service; and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
