UNL's Block and Bridle names Jay Wolf of Albion, Hall of Fame honoree

Nebraska

Jay Wolf, president of Wagonhammer Cattle Company of Albion, Neb., will be honored as a new member of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Block and Bridle Hall of Fame.

Wolf will be honored April 25 at the Department of Animal Science and Block and Bridle annual honors banquet at 6:30 p.m., at the Nebraska East Union on UNL's East Campus. Banquet tickets are $16 and can be purchased by contacting Nancy Savery by April 18 at 402-472-6440, e-mail nsavery1@unl.edu. A reception for the Wolf family will precede the banquet at 5:30 p.m.

The Block and Bridle Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made commendable contributions to Nebraska agriculture through leadership, service, youth projects and community activities.

A 1980 College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources graduate, Wolf worked as a loan officer in the oil and gas industry. Upon returning home in 1984, Wolf contributed managerial, accounting and finance skills to the family operation, but still attributes the ongoing success of the operation to its longtime employees who have been with the company an average of 13 years.

Wolf's influential leadership in the Nebraska Cattlemen's organization since its formation in 1988 only begins the list of programs to which he has lent his expertise. He has served as president of both the Nebraska Cattlemen and the Nebraska Corn-Fed Beef Program. In addition, he sits on the Cattlemen's Beef Board and the Nebraska Cattlemen Veterinary Science Task Force. As a member of the Agriculture Builders of Nebraska Inc. and the Nebraska Grasslands Council, Wolf has done a lot to combat challenges the state has faced in the livestock industry. Providing both his own time and family funds, Wolf is assisting in the construction of a new teaching laboratory at the university's Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory near Whitman.

Other events of the evening include a year in review for Block and Bridle, Department of Animal Science scholarships and other Block and Bridle awards. Judging teams are also honored.

The Department of Animal Science in UNL's College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources is part of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
