UNL entomology faculty, graduate students win awardsNebraska Several University of Nebraska-Lincoln entomology faculty and graduate students received awards and recognition at the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America's annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio, March 24 to 27. Frederick P. Baxendale received the ESA-NCB Distinguished Achievement Award in Extension. Baxendale is a professor and extension specialist in UNL's Department of Entomology. He completed his master's and doctorate degrees in entomology at Texas A&M University, and earned his bachelor's degree in entomology at Cornell University. His extension responsibilities include programming for turfgrass and horticultural entomology, urban pest management, 4-H and youth entomology and forensic entomology. He also has served as a panelist on the popular, long-running "Backyard Farmer" television program since 1985. Baxendale is widely recognized for his expertise in the environmentally responsible management of turfgrass insect pests, and he is a leading authority on insects and mites on buffalograss. His research focuses on the development of integrated pest management strategies for insects affecting turfgrasses, native grasses and horticultural plantings. He has authored more than 300 extension and research publications and has secured more than $2.75 million in competitive and grant-in-aid funding to help support his extension and applied research programs. Tiffany Heng-Moss received the ESA-NCB Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching. Heng-Moss is an associate professor of entomology at UNL and has developed seven undergraduate and graduate courses while providing leadership for development of a new undergraduate major in insect science. Her introductory Insect Biology course was the first distance-delivered concurrent credit course offered as part of the University of Nebraska Advanced Scholars Program. She also is a member of the plant protection science, professional golf course management and forensic science curriculum committees. She serves as an adviser to several university student organizations and mentors undergraduate students conducting research in entomology. She is the department's undergraduate research coordinator and chair of the departmental curriculum committee. Heng-Moss provides program leadership for outreach activities such as "Our Zoo to YOU," which has been presented to more than 2,500 students in 85 Nebraska classrooms over the past five years and has secured more than $250,000 in competitive grant support. She is a major contributor and organizer for an annual Bug Bash educational program at the Lincoln Children's Zoo with the Lincoln Public Schools Science Focus Program. Stephen Young, UNL graduate student in entomology, received a first place poster presentation award for Master of Science students for his research "Effect of Monsanto corn event 88017 and adult diet on selected western corn rootworm life history traits." The poster was co-authored by his adviser, Lance Meinke, professor, entomology. A team of UNL entomology graduate students, Matthew Brust, Tim Husen, Erica Lindroth, Stephen Young, and alternate, Andre Crespo, won the championship of the Linnaean Games at the annual meeting. They qualify to compete at the national ESA meeting later this year. UNL previously won the 2006 ESA national championship. The Linnaean Games are a college bowl-style competition on entomological facts played between university-sponsored student teams. Toss-up questions cover knowledge about apiculture, biological control, ecology, economic entomology, medical and veterinary entomology, physiology and biochemistry, taxonomy and toxicology. Bonus questions can come from any area of entomology including history and people. The team was coached by Ken Pruess and Bob Wright, UNL entomologists. Awards for Educational Materials were presented by the Mid-America chapter of Board Certified Entomologists, in the following categories: Training Workshops: UNL Hands-on Termite School for Pest Management Professionals; Barbara Ogg, Clyde Ogg, Dennis Ferraro and Shripat Kamble. Computer Animation: Insect Molting; Analiza Alvez, Andres Crespo, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Blair Siegfried, Heather Dahm, and Nino Kapetanovic. Extension Publication: Lady Beetles of Nebraska; Alexander Cunningham, James Brandle, Stephen Danielson and Thomas Hunt.
