Nebraska Corn Board 30 year report looks at connecting markets

Nebraska

Nebraska corn producers are connected to markets throughout Nebraska and the world. From the beef producer down the road to the ethanol plant in the next county, from pork served in Tokyo to a deli container in Atlanta, from a poultry producer in California to a feed mill in Egypt, and back home to expand opportunities to bring more dairies and livestock to rural communities.

"In the end, corn ties all of these industries together and that better positions Nebraska to take advantage of numerous value-added opportunities," said Don Hutchens, executive director of the Nebraska Corn Board. "For 30 years now, the Nebraska Corn Board has managed corn producers' checkoff contributions with the vision of creating new markets, expanding new uses and enhancing the profitability of corn producers. And that has required staying connected through research, market development, education and promotion of this exciting industry."

Hutchens explained that corn producers' number one customer is still the livestock industry. But now, thanks to years of hard work and research, corn-based ethanol can serve as a renewable fuel source and the co-product distillers grains can continue to feed the livestock industry. "The inter-relationship of our industries has propelled Nebraska to the forefront of the corn-ethanol-distillers grains and back to livestock more than any other state in the nation," said Hutchens.

Nebraska's commodity checkoff programs have established a real foothold in developing demand-driven markets, and they are working together in that effort to serve the producers who pay into them. For example, beef, pork, soybean and corn checkoff dollars all work together to promote beef and pork exports. These commodity checkoff programs, along with the poultry industry, also work together to support the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska.

"For three decades, Nebraska corn checkoff dollars have strived to connect corn producers to their customers, new products, research and Capitol Hill," Hutchens said. "I believe our producers deserve and expect nothing less of their checkoff programs. It's not always easy for producers to pay for these self help programs but, at the end of the day, it is their contribution that helps build the growth for our agriculture commodities."

To celebrate its 30 year anniversary, the Nebraska Corn Board has produced a 30 year report called "Creating Connections" that was recently delivered to corn producers in Nebraska. It is also available by going to NebraskaCorn.org.
