Minnesota senate moves ahead with bill to fight bovine diseaseST. PAUL (AP)--An aggressive action plan aimed at stopping the spread of bovine tuberculosis in northwestern Minnesota has won preliminary Senate backing. The bill allocates money and authorizes regulators to assist in slaughtering cattle herds, erecting fences and taking other steps to fight the disease. Minnesota's bovine TB status has been downgraded because of the outbreak. That has led to new restrictions on shipping cattle and imposed testing requirements for ranchers and farmers. The bill would pay cattle owners $500 per head to slaughter their herds, plus annual payments until a zone in northwestern Minnesota is declared free of bovine TB. The bill differs slightly from a version that passed the House. 5/5/08 Date: 4/29/08 Advertisement
