Lovewell Reservoir turns 50 years oldKansas Lovewell Reservoir will be 50 years old this summer and with a joint effort from the Kansas Bostwick Irrigation District, Bureau of Reclamation, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and members of the surrounding reservoir community, a celebration date has been set for June 1. Tentative plans for the celebration will be to start at 1 p.m., at the Courtland Arts Center with the Irrigation District presenting a short program on 50 years of irrigation procedures and how far we have come. Tour coaches will be provided to take you on a tour of the Irrigation District and points of interest in the area on the way to Lovewell Reservoir. The tour will then travel to Lovewell State Park for a Rededication Ceremony and presentations from the Bureau of Reclamation, Wildlife and Parks, and others highlighting the multi-use function of the reservoir. The Rededication Ceremony will be held at the same location as the first dedication originally presented on June 5, 1958. Immediately following the ceremony, a barbecue lunch will be served by the Lovewell Marina. Then the tour continues on to view the Bureau of Reclamation flood control structures and more irrigation facilities on the return trip to Courtland. Lovewell Reservoir has been a major part of many families over the years whether it was working on the original construction, farming the land that it irrigates, benefiting from its flood control, especially in 1972 and again in 1993, operating a business that directly benefits from it, or recreating on its public lands. Please mark you calendar for June 1, and plan to attend and share your memories of the Lovewell Reservoir. The ceremony at the State Park will be open to everyone and will be unlimited; however bus tour seats and barbecue tickets may become limited. People wanting to take the bus tour and/ or attend the barbecue are encouraged to contact the Swedish American State Bank at 785-374-4231 as soon as possible, but no later than May 16 in order to confirm your spot. Anyone interested in contributing to this event can also contact the Swedish American State Bank.
