Late April rain, snow slows fieldwork

Cool weather and late April rain and snow slowed spring fieldwork across the state during the week ending April 27, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, April 28.

As of April 27, land preparation and plantings for all crops were about two weeks behind the five-year average for that date.

The average temperature for the week was 45.4 degrees, 1.9 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of April 25 were rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 60 percent adequate, and 37 percent surplus.

As of April 27, land prepared for corn was 3 percent complete compared to 29 percent last year and 41 percent for the five-year average. Land prepared for soybeans was 1 percent complete compared to 5 percent last year and 10 percent average.

Spring wheat was 6 percent planted compared to 15 percent last year and 33 percent average. Oats were 9 percent planted compared to 30 percent last year and 49 percent average. Ten percent of sugar beets were planted compared to 27 percent last year and 42 percent average.
