Ken Winter addresses cattle industry issues in Gas

Kansas

Kansas Cattlemen's Association is hosting an informational meeting and membership drive in conjunction with a hamburger cookout at the Allen County Livestock Auction, in Gas, Kan., at 7 p.m., on May 2. This event is free and open to the public.

The key note speaker for this event will be Ken Winter from Dodge City. Ken is the owner and manager of Winter Feed Yard. The Winter family has been in production agriculture for four generations, owning four livestock auction markets and a ranch northwest of Dodge where they run stocker cattle and have a dry land farming operation. Their livestock auctions are located in La Junta, Colo., Enid, Okla., Riverton ,Wyo., and Dodge City, Kan., being the first purchased by the family in 1936.

Winter will be discussing current industry issues including the potential JBS acquisition of National, Smithfield Beef, and Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding. Also, he will be discussing the work that KCA has recently been accomplishing.

"There are two organizations in Kansas, and they do not always agree on the issues. Anytime you have an opportunity to come out and hear what is happening in the industry and what an organization is doing, you should do so," Winter said. "We look forward to seeing area producers because we are charged with representing them, and we are encouraged when we get the opportunity to hear from them as well."

"Ken is an exceptional speaker, very involved in making a positive contribution to the cattle industry, and tremendously knowledgeable about the issues that U.S. cattle producers face," Brandy Carter, executive director of KCA said. "We hope that all area community members will head to the Gas sale barn on May 2 to hear Ken and help support the rural communities that are so vital to production agriculture."

Winter is the outgoing KCA president, and this event is the second in a series that Kansas Cattlemen's Association is hosting across the state of Kansas this year. 100 percent USA Beef hamburgers and refreshments will be provided by free will donation and a rollover calf sale will immediately follow Winter's speaking engagement.

This event is sponsored entirely by local businesses including Edwards Land and Cattle, Ag Choice, Bank of Gas, Citizen's Bank in Iola, Community National Bank in Eureka and Iola, Diamond S Manufacturing in Eureka, Emprise Bank in Iola, Piqua State Bank in Piqua and Yates Center, Stewart Farms in Eureka, Team Bank in Iola, and Yates Center Branch Bank.
