Wheat plot meetings scheduled in 2008Nebraska Because a lot of new wheat varieties come out every year, producers need a way to evaluate them in their area. That's why University of Nebraska-Lincoln Cropping System Specialist Bob Klein schedules wheat meetings every year. UNL tests almost all the varieties that are on the market, plus a lot of experimental ones, Klein said. "The wheat meetings give producers an opportunity to see how they've done in their local areas under current growing conditions. "Without a doubt, one of the most important decisions producers make is selecting wheat varieties," Klein said. "There is no perfect variety that resists all stresses, so we recommend reducing risk by choosing four or five varieties." Producer with limited acres may choose a blend that does well locally. The meetings provide updates of the wheat market, benefits of wheat stubble and how to care for it. They cover stripper heads, management practices used on the test plots, any diseases that have appeared in the area, insect pests, fertility and weed management. Meetings are scheduled at the following times and places: --June 6: Holt County Irrigated; 7 a.m. Breakfast at Atkinson Livestock Market in cooperation with Arrow Seed Company Inc. and Syngenta Seed Care; host educator: Ralph Kulm. --June 9: Chase County Irrigated; 5 p.m., at Tom Luhrs Farm; Plot is located from Junction of 6 and 61 in Imperial, 4 miles east on Hwy. 6 to Mile Marker 29.5 in cooperation with AgriPro and Luhrs Certified Seed and Conditioning; host educator: Nancy Frecks. --June 10: Keith County Rainfed; 8 a.m., at Village Cafe in Brule in cooperation with Arrow Seed Company, Inc.; host educator: Doug Anderson. --June 12: Furnas County Rainfed; 7 a.m., at First Methodist Church in Arapahoe; 701 5th Street in cooperation with Arrow Seed Company, Inc.; host educator: Noel Mues. --June 12: Red Willow County Rainfed; 6 p.m., Community Building at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds; West 5th and O Streets in McCook in cooperation with Frenchman Valley Coop, McCook; host educator: Mary K. Warner. "I've been out checking the plots lately and we have some good stands of wheat," Klein said. "We should have some good plots to show the producers." Klein said that producers don't need to register in advance.
