Sonora's 71st Wool Show undergoes changeTexas This year's 71st annual Wool and Mohair Show will see some changes that reflect the U.S. wool industry's current situation, said a show official. The show is held in conjunction with the 48th annual National 4-H Wool Judging Contest and the eighth annual FFA Wool Judging Contest. These events are set for June 17 to 19 in the Sutton County 4-H Civic Center in Sonora. "As a reflection of the continued decline in wool sheep numbers, the number of fleece entries has been on the decline for quite a while," said Pascual Hernandez, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent in Sutton County. "The committee believed it to be better to focus on the youth entries only. Therefore there will no longer be an open show for adults or a bag of wool division." Even with the changes, the show is still the premier event of its type in the world, he said. "The show and the accompanying contests encourage profitable livestock production, knowledge of rangeland vegetation, and proper wool and mohair preparation," he said. "We make a point to offer a fun learning experience that's geared to ranching practices common in our range production area." Show activities will include an All-Texas Show for 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters, the National FFA Wool Judging Contest, and the featured event: the National 4-H Wool Judging Contest. Wool and mohair fleeces and bag entries will be weighed and tagged starting at 10 a.m., on June 17. All fleeces must be in by 3:30 p.m., that day. Activities on June 18 will start at 7 a.m. A livestock judging competition and judging of the junior wool and mohair entries will begin at 8:15 a.m. Range judging participants will depart from the Sutton County 4-H Civic Center at 10 a.m. that day. The wool and mohair judging contest will begin at 1:30 p.m., at the Sutton County 4-H Civic Center. Teams may register for the national 4-H and FFA wool judging contests until 5 p.m. June 18 at the civic center. On June 19, activities will begin at 8 a.m., with the national 4-H and FFA wool judging contests at the Sutton County 4-H Civic Center. The day will conclude at the center with an 11:30 a.m. awards luncheon, sponsored by The Sonora Lions Club and the Sonora Chamber of Commerce. Sponsors for all the events are the Sonora Lions Club, Sonora Chamber of Commerce, Sonora Wool and Mohair Company and AgriLife Extension.
