Cattle rustler gets jail time for stealing from California dairy

OAKDALE, Calif. (AP)--A dairy foreman is headed to jail after pleading guilty to stealing 20 cows from his boss.

William Cantone allegedly took two or three cows per month from Schaafsma Dairy and S&H Dairy in Oakdale, Calif., and hid the losses by declaring the animals dead. When confronted, Cantone told authorities that dairy owner Peter Schaafsma, who recently died, authorized him to take the cows as a bonus.

Schaafsma's daughter says Cantone's claims forced prosecutors to only charge him with stealing 20 cows, but she believes he took at least 44.

Cantone is scheduled to begin a 90-day jail sentence on April 18, followed by three years of probation. He also has been ordered to pay restitution and a $200 fine.
